Three Hidden Gems You'll Find in Ouray, Colorado
By: James Palmer
High Bridge along Perimeter Trail
The charming mountain town of Ouray, nestled in the San Juan Mountains, is often referred to as the “Switzerland of America”. Famous for its sweeping vistas, hot springs, and abundance of recreational activities, the region boasts some hidden gems well worth discovering on your next trip to Colorado.
Whether you’re embarking on a culinary-focused holiday to taste the authentic flavors of the Southwest, or you want to get lost in the natural beauty of the mountains, here are three enchanting locations off-the-beaten-path to add to your Ouray itinerary.
Ouray Alchemist Museum
Though it’s often overshadowed by mainstream museums in the region, the Ouray Alchemist Museum is a private collection of antique medical instruments, rare apothecary bottles, and stories about frontier medicinal techniques. You’ll need to book a private tour, but for history buffs, this is a fascinating glimpse into Colorado’s past that you won’t want to miss.
It’s impossible not to marvel at the extensive collection of hand-blown pharmaceutical bottles, leech jars and patent medicine containers – some of which still hold out-dated potions and remedies from yesteryear. You can even step back in time and explore a 19th century mock pharmacy. The tour is delivered by Curtis, the museums’ collector, curator, pharmacist and owner, so it’s an incredibly rich educational experience.
Box Cañon’s High Bridge Trail
@Roxannrene
You’re sure to have Box Cañon on your itinerary already, but don’t only stick to the main trail. For those who aren’t scared of a little adventure, the High Bridge Trail is a breathtaking experience that takes you up 200ft to enjoy a bird-eye view of the cascading waterfall and gorgeous valley below.
Though it’s only half a mile long, the trail is steep and features quite a lot of steps. Be sure to explore the tunnel (just past the bridge) which was built for a water pipeline project in the early 1900s but then abandoned shortly after. Your rocky climb ends abruptly after around 0.15 miles, where it merges with the equally impressive Ouray Perimeter Trail.
If you continue along the Perimeter Trail, which takes you on an enchanting walk through woods, rivers, and falls, be sure to look under the bridge as you pass over Oak Creek. There’s a metal sculpture of a troll to be found, designed by SKOL Studio and Design as a nod to the classic children’s fable, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”.
